Draft English translation by Claude (Anthropic) from Kuyper’s Latin text of the second edition, made independently of David C. Noe’s published translation, with Kuyper’s page and column markers and translator’s notes. Source: Abraham Kuyper, ed., D. Francisci Junii Opuscula theologica selecta (1882), 39–101.
Junius’s Latin (first published 1594) and Kuyper’s 1882 edition of it are in the public domain in the United States. The English translation and its notes are new, made for Baptist Seminarian from that Latin text. Rights evidence. Verified 2026-10-22.
Claude's English translation of the Latin text in De theologia vera, made without reference to David C. Noe's published translation (A Treatise on True Theology, Reformation Heritage Books, 2014). It aims to be close rather than elegant: Junius's long periods are sometimes divided, but his technical vocabulary is rendered consistently (sapientia "wisdom," scientia "knowledge" or "science," ratio "reason" or "account," principium "principle," secundum quid "in a certain respect," communicatio "communication"). Greek words are kept in parentheses after their English sense.
- [p. N] and [col. N] are carried over from the Latin note (Kuyper's pages and his Geneva/Heidelberg column references) and placed at the nearest sentence boundary.
- The theses, italic in the chapters as in Kuyper, are translated afresh at each occurrence, so small differences of wording follow differences in the Latin.
- Square brackets mark words supplied for sense. Numbered footnotes are the translator's notes.
- Every passage where this translation differs in sense from Noe's has been checked against the Latin. Noe translated the 1613 Geneva edition, which has not been collated here; his own notes cite Kuyper's Latin at most of these places, so the differences are of translation rather than of text. Where the Latin itself is in doubt, the footnotes say so.
